1/ St Louis Fed piece on Bitcoin: - Bullish case: price will appreciate indefinitely due to capped supply & ever-growing demand. - Bearish case: price will fall to zero, as it's an intrinsically worthless. => price likely to remain between extremes.

research.stlouisfed.org/publications/e…

2/ Bullish case too optimistic because Altcoins represent *substitute products*.

"There are no fundamental economic factors determining the exchange rate between two intrinsically worthless objects. Something similar holds true for Bitcoin and Altcoin."

3/ Trading above fundamentals is commonplace. - Many securities trade above fundamentals. - Gold trades above its value as measured by its industrial applications.

- The USD trades above its fundamental value in discharging tax obligations.

Large quantities of data = High quality of science. My new Nature Human Behaviour paper published today with @ShuhBillSkee shows that this could not be further from the truth. nature.com/articles/s4156… (1/10)

For our work we focus on the association between digital technology use and teen well-being, which has been getting a lot of press lately. Too much, if you ask me. (2/10)

Some days people find negative associations, some days positive, some days none at all. Why is there no consistency in scientific findings? (3/10)

I’ve reached the point where I can no longer say the shutdown isn’t compromising safety. There have been nonstop frequency issues in the last two weeks and the people whose job it is to fix the transmitters and receivers in the field are apparently furloughed. 1/

I’ve encountered numerous situations where I can’t hear aircraft or they can’t hear me. The foot of snow that just fell is making it worse. All of the spare frequencies we have are all in use so now we’re forced to leave busy sectors combined because we’re out of good freqs. 2/

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve gone down the tubes this month because of my frequencies suck. Our infrastructure is crumbling because the “non-essential” people tasked with its upkeep aren’t there to do their job. 3/

Desmond Swayne looks like a man who massively misjudges personal space boundaries, and always speaks 10 decibels higher than appropriate.

Slaps people needlessly hard on the back as he explains the joke he's just told through bursts of uncomfortably roary laughter.

Guaranteed manspreader.

@tasshinfogleman Ooh! I was excited to read this, because I've been meaning to write about "systematic" reliability vs. "meta-systematic" reliability!

For example, out of the categories you mentioned, some will come into conflict. 1/

@tasshinfogleman Ex: A tense interaction happens just as you're about to leave for a meeting. "Ah, I have a need and opportunity for a deep, heartfelt, difficult, reconnecting conversation -- and if I do that, I'll be late for the meeting." What do you do?
2/
@tasshinfogleman The answer depends on context, and on -- what are you trying to be highly reliable *at* and why? Coming from the idea of a "Highly Reliable Organization" / HRO -- see Managing the Unexpected book by Karl Weick:

In terms of feeling like I Am A Real Writer, I Do Real Writer Things, nothing really compares to being asked to write an introduction to someone else's collection.

Which actually feeds nicely into something I was thinking about over the weekend: that the human brain simultaneously is bad at novelty AND bad at accepting change.

If I go back to the first few months of my Twitter (oh, 2009 Seanan, you had no idea how weird this was all going to get), I am literally counting down to the release of ROSEMARY AND RUE. Like, "186 days to release I am freaking out" is a legit sentiment.

💥#Kavanaugh+#WilliamBarr confirmation: this is why Kavanaugh is there. By appointing his own judges and DOJ leads, Trump is applying the Kremlin’s pattern to silence investigation into corrupt presidents used by Yeltsin and Putin before. Thread. 👇
