How to turn on Dark Mode on your Windows 10 computer to reduce eye strain and give the computer a sleek look
You can turn on dark mode on Windows 10 through the "Personalization" menu, which lets you change how your computer looks. Some programs in Windows 10 have their own dark mode settings, like Microsoft Office. When you turn on dark mode in Windows, many on-screen colors will change from white to gray or black. Android and iOS devices offer a dark mode that dims the on-screen color palette. It's commonly thought to look much more aesthetically pleasing, in addition to extending battery life. If you like using dark mode on your mobile device, you might be surprised to learn that Windows 10 has had its own dark mode for several years. Here's how to turn it on. Check out the products mentioned in the article: Windows 10 (From $139.99 at Best Buy) Acer Chromebook 15 (From $179.99 at Walmart) How to turn on dark mode on Windows 1. Click the Start button and then click the Settings icon, which is shaped like a gear.
- Click "Personalization."
- In the pane on the left, click "Colors." There are two dark mode settings you can enable. You can choose either of both of them:
Under "Choose your default Windows mode," click "Dark." This will turn on dark mode for many basic parts of Windows — in particular, the task bar at the bottom of the desktop and the Start menu. Under "Choose your default app mode," click "Dark." This has a much more widespread effect, and will automatically activate dark mode in many apps that have it.
How to turn on dark mode in specific Windows apps If you turn on both dark modes and find that some specific apps still don't turn dark, those apps might have their own independent dark mode settings. To find out, open the settings for the app in question and see if there's a settings menu you can enable dark mode in. For example, here is how to turn on dark mode in Microsoft Office: 1. In any Microsoft Office app (such as Word, Excel, or Outlook), click "File" and then click "Options." 2. In the General tab, go to the section called "Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office." 3. Click the drop-down menu for "Office Theme" and choose either "Dark Gray" or "Black." Click "OK" and the dark mode will take effect.

Without these drivers, most of your computer would break down. And like other pieces of software, they occasionally need to be updated. However, it's not always easy to figure out how to update them. Many drivers on your computer are updated automatically whenever Windows updates. But if you need to manually install or update a driver, you can do that using the Device Manager. How to update a driver in Windows 10 1. Right-click the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen and select "Device Manager" from the list that appears. 2. Use the menu to locate the device you want to update. To update an audio device, for example, click the ">" arrow beside "Audio inputs and outputs" and locate the device in the list. 3. Right-click the device you need to update and in the pop-up, choose "Update driver." 4. You'll be asked whether you want Windows to search the internet for a new driver to install automatically, or if you have a file on your computer that you want to use. In nearly all cases, you'll want to select the automatic option. 5. Windows will try to find an updated driver and install it. If it can't find any, it'll tell you that your driver is up-to-date. If Windows tells you that you have a fully updated driver, but you're sure you don't, find out who the manufacturer of that specific computer part is — you can usually just Google its name — and look at their website. They might have drivers you can download and install manually. This is common for graphics cards made by Nvidia and AMD. How to reinstall a driver in Windows 10 If a device is behaving erratically, you might need to remove and reinstall the driver. The process is similar to updating the driver. 1. Open the Device Manager again by right-clicking the Windows icon and selecting "Device Manager." 2. Use the menu to locate the device you want to reinstall. To find an audio device, for example, click the ">" arrow beside "Audio inputs and outputs" and locate the device in the list. 3. Right-click the device you need to reinstall and in the menu, choose "Uninstall device." Don't worry, your computer will be fine. 4. Restart your PC. When the computer restarts, Windows will find the device and reinstall the latest driver. What to do if drivers aren't updating automatically If Windows isn't automatically updating a driver that you believe it should, Windows updates might be temporarily paused. You can check this and unpause it if needed. 1. In the Start button search box, type "Windows update" and click "Windows Update settings" when it appears in the search results. 2. Click "Advanced options." 3. In the "Pause updates" section, check the date under "Pause until." 4. If you see a date in the future, click the drop-down menu and choose the soonest date (which should be tomorrow) to unpause updates. Many of the most powerful computers on the market use Nvidia graphics cards. And like any part of your computer, the software on your Nvidia cards — also known as their "drivers" — occasionally need to be upgraded. Keeping your graphics card updated is vital, as outdated drivers can cause all sorts of glitches and bugs. Luckily, you don't need to pull the card out of your computer to update its drivers. You can just download new drivers, much like you would update a regular app. There are two ways to download Nvidia drivers and keep your system up to date, but before you get started, you need to know what kind of Nvidia card is installed on your computer. How to find what kind of Nvidia graphics card you have 1. Right-click the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, and select "Device Manager" in the pop-up that appears. 2. In the Device Manager, find the "Display Adapters" line and click the arrow next to it. This will show you all the graphics cards currently active on your computer. 3. You should see the name of your graphics card. Write it down for reference. If it doesn't say "Nvidia" — it might say "Intel" or "AMD" instead — then you don't have an Nvidia card, and will need to download your drivers in a different way. How to download Nvidia drivers In all cases, note that when you download and install Nvidia drivers, your screen may turn black or flash erratically. This is normal — the graphics card is testing out the new drivers, which can sometimes cause temporary visual glitches. If you have an Nvidia Ge Force card When you looked at your graphics card, was it called an Nvidia "GeForce"? If so, Nvidia offers a free app that will download all the drivers you need automatically, similar to the way Windows keeps your other computer files up to date. Here's how to use GeForce Experience: 1. Open the Nvidia website in a browser. 2. In the navigation menu across the top of the webpage, click "Drivers" and then click "GeForce Drivers." 3. In the "Automatic Driver Updates" section, click "Download Now" to download the GeForce Experience app. 4. Install the program, and then open it and let it identify what kind of graphics card you have. It should now download new drivers whenever they're available, and let you know how to install them — usually, this is as simple as clicking one button. In some cases, the GeForce Experience app might have come pre-installed on your computer. If this is the case, find the app by searching for it, and then see if it has any drivers ready to download or install. If you have another Nvidia card If you don't have an Nvidia GeForce graphics card, or simply don't want to install the GeForce Experience app, you can check for and download drivers manually. 1. Open the Nvidia website in a browser. 2. In the navigation menu across the top of the webpage, click "Drivers" and then click "All Nvidia Drivers." 3. In the Nvidia Driver Download form, search for your video card. Enter the product type (such as GeForce, Titan, or Quattro), product series, and specific product name. You should be able to get all this information from the Windows Device Manager. 4. When you're done, click "Search." 5. When the search results appear, click "Download" to save the file to your computer. When the download is complete, you can open the file to install it. If you're offered more than one kind of driver — "Game Ready," sometimes called "WHQL," or "Studio," you should usually choose the Game Ready/WHQL driver. This will help all programs run better, but focuses on video games If you're a creative professional who uses their computer primarily for graphic or video editing software, and you don't play games, pick the Studio driver. The Game Ready drivers will work with both games and graphics software, but the Studio drivers can sometimes cause issues with games.
